Social Responsibility

The capture and release of an Oribi
NCT undertakes social investment initiatives where it makes practical and meaningful contributions to society. In this light, NCT strives to have a positive impact on people, cultures and communities and to promote productive life-styles in areas in which it operates.

NCT is committed to operating in an environmentally-responsible way. Our Environmental Policy encourages all Members to conduct their farming operations in a sustainable manner. The policy covers economic, social and conservation issues.

Areas of conservation significance should be identified by land owners and managed appropriately. These areas include natural forests, wetlands, refuges for rare and endangered species and sites of cultural or historic interest. Members are also advised to reduce impacts resulting from chemical use and minimise wastage on farms. This includes extracting all usable timber from felled compartments.

The NCT Group Certification schemes are useful tools to influence management practices on farms and ensure that operations comply with national and international forestry standards. The NCT FSC management system requires that Members comply with the South African Forestry Environmental Guidelines. Members are encouraged to manage about 10% of their farms as representative eco-systems. Approximately a third of farms owned by NCT Members are certified under the FSC system.
