AGM Review
NCT presented a positive reflection of the past year and the outlook for the foreseeable future to members at its AGM.

Recognition for Tree Farmers
Ralph Dobeyn and Bhekokuhle Mnguni were awarded the 2007 NCT Tree Farmers of the Year award at this year’s AGM.

Wattle
Wattle timber has led the race in providing the best returns to growers for several years. With the latest increases in Wattle timber and bark prices, it has moved even further into the lead compared to other timber species.

Woodchip Corner
CTC has taken the responsibility to oversee the rehabilitation of the f o r m e r Longridge Colliery situated on its Longridge Estate in Paulpietersburg to its natural state.

Burning Issues
Landowners incurred millions of Rand after runaway veld fires caused extensive damage to properties in KwaZulu-Natal & Mpumalanga in June and July. The extreme dry conditions exacerbated by strong winds (up to 120km/hr), caused fires to rage out of control and spread rapidly.

The Tree Protection Co-operative Programme (TPCP) was established in 1990 to serve the South African forestry industry’s needs concerning tree health.

Pest Alert
The Blue Gum Chalcid, (Leptocybe invasa) is a new genus and species of insect that was first recorded in the Middle East in 2000 and has spread to most Mediterranean countries and to many of the Eucalyptus areas in northern and eastern Africa.

NCT Profile
Growing up on a farm in Elgin and with both parents coming from farming backgrounds, it’s no wonder that Lauren van Deventer, NCT ’s Strategy and Planning Forester, followed a career in forestry.

The Natal Midlands Dwarf Chameleons
How many of you have seen ‘dwarf lions’ whilst felling trees in the Midlands? The Greeks called them ‘chamai leons’ (dwarf lions) because of their aggressiveness when attacked. Most of the indigenous peoples of Africa have a superstitious dread of chameleons and are wary of handling them.
