31 INTEGRATED ANNUAL REPORT 2022 The NCT FSC-group-scheme has been in existence for 22 years. However, most of the farms certified under this scheme can be classified as large-scale. The complexity and costs of managing plantations under the FSC system precludes many smaller operations from achieving FSC certification. To resolve this challenge, NCT has been working with industry partners to develop a market-based standard that is more relevant to South African plantation forestry, particularly for smaller scale operations. This new standard has been internationally endorsed by the PEFC and although this is a new certificate, NCT already has over 20 independent farmers registered on the system.
