33 INTEGRATED ANNUAL REPORT 2022 A great organisation cannot be built without great people. Simply put, NCT is proud of its staff who performed exceptionally well during a year with many challenges. Despite all of the disruptions, we believe that we achieved our objective of maintaining staff motivation by means of the manner in which we introduced new staff into NCT, the training, remuneration and benefit packages provided, and, very importantly, the additional support rendered for employee wellbeing. NCT conducted in-house employee surveys to gauge staff sentiment. Positive results were received regarding NCT’s approach to Covid-19 with high scores (over 80%) attained for employee pride, leadership and culture of the organisation. Employee training and development Staff need be on top of their game in an ever-evolving world where technology becomes more high-tech, legal compliance more involved and overall scientific advances are a given. NCT plays an active role in ensuring that its staff receive the necessary training to keep skills sharp, and we further invest in self-development where there is mutual benefit. NCT invested R611 000 in staff training, recovering R247 846 from the Fibre Processing and Manufacturing SETA as a skills development refund for the training carried out in the previous reporting period. In addition to staff training, NCT has continued to show its commitment to student development by sponsoring two full-time forestry students at the Nelson Mandela University. NCT also supports five students in their post-graduate studies towards MSc or PhD qualifications in forestry research ranging from technology-based advancement in forestry operations to the Eucalyptus snout beetle.
