Access to Durban Wood Chips was impeded for a short period. Regular updates regarding the situation were provided to members via special Member Briefs. External industrial action Communicating external events An unexpected and destructive breakdown of the chipper occurred that severely impeded Eucalyptus access to mill. The NCT Durban Wood Chips and Richards Bay engineering teams combined resources and expertise and effected the repair over the course of two months (at least a month in advance of expectation). Special briefs kept members regularly informed of repair progress. A workshop was held with Eucalyptus smallgrowers most affected by the breakdown and temporary lack of market access. Limited Eucalyptus chipping was conducted via NCT BayFibre so as to meet client order and allow limited Eucalyptus flow to continue.
