These advancements were driven by the industry’s response to the challenges posed by wattle rust. Selective and corrective pruning was highlighted as an essential management practice. The outdated “Boere metode,” where all branches were removed up to breast height, has since been replaced by more selective pruning techniques that promote healthier and more productive trees. Following the indoor session, foresters and participants moved into the field, where practical discussions continued. Several field stops allowed further engagement, highlighting both successful outcomes and valuable lessons learned. These in-field discussions provided practical insight and reinforced key take-home messages from the day. The event concluded back at the base, where discussions continued in a relaxed setting around a fire. Participants enjoyed a well-deserved cooldrink and traditional boerewors rolls, kindly provided by UCL. The field day proved to be a valuable opportunity for knowledge sharing, collaboration, and strengthening relationships between commercial growers and small-scale farmers, ensuring the continued growth and sustainability of the wattle industry in Melmoth. Feedback from attendees was overwhelmingly positive, with participants expressing that they had gained valuable knowledge on the production and management of wattle. Everyone extended their appreciation to UCL for the informative presentations and to NCT for hosting the day.
