2022 Annual Report

15 INTEGRATED ANNUAL REPORT 2022 Non-pulpwood There was a good recovery for non-pulpwood markets. Those markets make up 3.6% of NCT’s total sales volumes into 22 local markets. Sales increased 16% from 65 698 tonnes to 76 148 tonnes. This was mainly due to securing alternative markets with the push back from the local pulp producers during last year’s pandemic period. No bad debts were incurred in the first trading of NCT’s in-house credit verification system. Wood chips NCT’s views on the international wood chip markets remain unchanged – the Japanese sector may never return to pre-Covid-19 import volumes; and China remains the main area for potential growth as new capacity starts up during the next two years. Other markets such as Korea and Taiwan remain flat. However, from NCT’s perspective, our Japanese customers returned to normal imports from us, and then a little more. Our new Chinese customers kept their volumes constant and continue to call on both Richards Bay and Durban, proving strategic importance to NCT. All of this is a direct result of NCT working hard to position itself as a stable and reliable trading partner, with high degrees of flexibility and professionalism to all of our markets. Export by destination China 31% Other 3% Japan 65%
