22 INTEGRATED ANNUAL REPORT 2025 TREE FARMING The NCT Group owns approximately 18,000 hectares of plantations. These farms play a crucial role in ensuring the Cooperative remains a reliable supplier of timber to various markets. NCT-owned farms serve as a strategic timber reserve. Production can be increased during periods of undersupply or scaled back during times of oversupply. This flexibility was demonstrated during the past supply season following the Richards Bay fire and subsequent rebuild, when E. smithii was harvested at short notice to meet demand and generate income for the Co-operative. Timber Supply Over the past year, NCT-owned farms also stockpiled approximately 60 000 tonnes of Acacia timber to support members and the bark industry. This timber was delivered over five months to the Richards Bay mill during its rebuild and start-up, ensuring a consistent and reliable supply, and yet allowing members to take priority. During the year in question, NCT harvested and sold 85 800 Acacia, 41 500 Eucalyptus and 44 300 E. Smithii to mills and other markets. Sales The farms unfortunately have a large volume of over-age mixed Eucalyptus that is a major problem and will take several years to clear once suitable markets return or new ones are developed. The majority of this being in the Northern area. We are actively looking for alternative markets. Farm sales At the end of 2024, NCT sold the Shincel Farms in Mooi River due to the unsuitability of species that could be cultivated there and to raise much-needed funds for the Co-operative.
