NCT STUTTERHEIM DISTRICT OFFICE – 10 YEAR ANNIVERSARY Lwazi Ngqwebo | Supply & Logistics Co-ordinator NCT established its formal footprint through the Stutterheim office around 2016, recognising the untapped potential in the region. At the time, the wattle timber resource in the province was largely underutilised due to long distances to NCT mills and logistical challenges. However, the presence of the NCT office created a direct link between Eastern Cape suppliers and key markets. This has enabled improved access, better coordination, and increased participation of suppliers in the timber value chain. In the early years, the Eastern Cape supplied approximately 50,000 tonnes per annum, supported by around 50 NCT suppliers, following the establishment of the Stutterheim office and improved access to markets. The region played a strategic role during the winter period, as most commercial growers in KwaZuluNatal do not strip bark during this time, enabling the Eastern Cape to support consistent supply into NCT mills. Over time, the region continued to grow despite UNLOCKING POTENTIAL AND GROWTH logistical challenges, strengthening its position within NCT’s supply network. In the last supply year, the Eastern Cape delivered approximately 78 746 tonnes, reflecting significant growth over the past decade. While the number of active suppliers has reduced from approximately 54 to 42, the region has seen improved consistency, reliability, and overall supply performance from a more committed supplier base. 37 36
