Here are some community projects recently undertaken by the cooperative, reflecting its ongoing commitment to fostering strong relationships with communities. Uzwelo Children’s Home Uzwelo Home, located in the timber-growing province of Mpumalanga in Piet Retief, is a children’s home with a mission to provide child protection and care to traumatised and neglected children. Established as a registered child and youth care centre in 2001, Uzwelo Home has prioritised education for over 23 years, actively seeking suitable schools to address each child’s academic needs and abilities, ultimately aiming for improved academic outcomes. Homework support is a key component of Uzwelo Home’s approach, with staff and specialised tutors assisting children in their studies. Over nearly a decade, NCT Forestry has emerged as a steadfast partner in the realm of childcare. Their invaluable contribution, especially in supplying school clothes for underprivileged children, plays a crucial role in the children’s wellbeing. Recognising the significance of proper, neat, and well-fitting school uniforms, Uzwelo Home believes in creating an environment conducive to learning, thereby enhancing the educational experience. This commitment extends beyond academics, acknowledging the importance of a sense of belonging in the healing process for those who have experienced abuse, trauma, and neglect. Upon admission, many children arrive without personal or school clothes, and Uzwelo ensures that they are provided with clothing and toiletries. The impact of this support is evident in the pride the children take in their appearance when attending school. The positive effects are far-reaching, as teachers, fellow learners, and the public comment on the children’s neat school attire, contributing to an increase in their self-worth.
