30 Philani Mkhonza is a dedicated and ambitious 36-year-old Mulcher Operator at NCT. His journey with NCT began in September 2014 as a Workshop Assistant. From there, he advanced to become a Tractor Driver, later transitioned back into the Workshop, and ultimately earned his current position as Mulcher Operator. Throughout his tenure, Philani has received extensive training on the mulcher, consistently maintaining it to high industry standards as per RSG, with the NCT mulcher recognised as one of the best-kept in the field. In the previous year, NCT acquired a TIGERCAT M726G MULCHER, seeking a skilled operator to both drive and maintain it. Management, recognising Philani’s accumulated expertise and commitment, invited him to take on the role. Embracing the opportunity, he has since excelled as the mulcher operator, bringing both skill and dedication to his work. During fire season, his team knew they could rely on his equipment to perform, even if it meant extra hours to ensure everything was in peak condition. Over the last decade, his hard work and dedication have been evident in every task, while his experience with various mechanics has broadened his skills. Before joining NCT, Philani worked as an Assistant Electrician in Middelburg. Initially hesitant to join the forestry sector due to its perception as labour-intensive, he has since recognised the significant impact forestry has on communities and the vast opportunities within the sector. He now encourages young people to consider careers in forestry. Philani has found his passion in the forestry sector, aspiring one day to become an operator trainer and supervisor. His hope for NCT’s future is that it continues to grow and raise awareness about the importance of forestry, especially in fire prevention and community welfare. Through his time at NCT, Philani has learned that respect, patience, and humility are essential qualities for success. Despite facing challenges, his initiative and perseverance have helped him reach his current position. He is especially grateful to Dez, a mechanic who offered invaluable support, and to Adrian, NCT’s Fleet Manager, whose workshops and training broadened Philani’s perspective and opened doors to new opportunities. He now views forestry from a larger perspective and values the mechanical knowledge he has gained along the way.
