NEWS & VIEWS • SEPTEMBER 2025 21 While the E. grandis x E. smithii hybrid offers benefits of expanding areas established with plant material of increased site adaptability and superior wood properties, the hybrid, especially GS 211 should not be seen as a replacement of E. smithii. Due to the lower density, its planting should be limited only to areas previously unsuitable to E. smithii such as those with warmer temperatures (>17C) and/or susceptibility to Phytophthora. When planted, the hybrid can be established in areas with altitudes between 800 and 1300 m above sea level, or marginal E. smithii sites. Frost-prone areas and frost pockets should be avoided.
