34 INTEGRATED ANNUAL REPORT 2023 During the reporting period, NCT spent R1 million on training staff. We were able to recover R252 400 from the Fibre Processing and Manufacturing SETA as a skills development refund for the training done in the previous reporting period. During the year NCT placed special focus on Emotional Quotient (EQ) Training of junior to senior management. The course was designed to enable leaders to recognise, understand and manage the impact of emotion on behaviour to engage team members more effectively. 38 employees completed the EQ course, and we believe that the new skills learned will lead to motivated teams and improve business results. Employee Training and Development Employee Demographics SETA Refund and Training Spend (Rands) The Employment Equity Committee oversees equity related matters at NCT. The committee met three times during the reporting period during which it conducted barrier analyses, noted the Work-Place Skills Plan (WSP) and Annual Training Report (ATR), and reconstituted the committee to allow for greater representation of its workforce. The equity report was submitted for the Co-operative, NCT Durban Wood Chips (Pty) Ltd and Bayfibre (Pty) Ltd. At the end of the reporting period, it was noted that the NCT male–female representation remained at 76% and 24% respectively. The overall racial distribution for the NCT group is more aligned with the provincial demographics. There is however still a need for more transformation at middle to senior management level.
